GREAT WAR: 13 men from Marston Green lost their lives in the conflict |
THEY were the young men from Marston Green who gave their lives fighting in the First World War...
Now Bickenhill Parish Council wants to find out more about the 13 servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice almost a 100 years ago.
The organisation is planning to put on a number of events to commemorate a century since the bloodiest war in history (which was fought from 1914-1918).
As part of the anniversary events, parish councillors need the help of local people to reveal more about the individuals whose names appear on a brass plaque in the village's memorial garden.
The wedge of land, which contains a similar tribute to those killed in the Second World War, is in Station Road and had a grand reopening in 2011.
Councillor Peter Seazell said: "Communities across Solihull have memorials carrying the names of those who gave their lives in the conflict and the names are read out during the annual memorial services held each November, yet the true impact of the loss on the families and communities left behind is less well understood."
The council would like to find out about the ages, families and military record of the 13 casualties.
They would also be keen to make contact with locals whose relatives fought and returned alive from the trenches.
